Utility Connections: Set Up Every Service Before You Move

Arriving to working lights, water and Wi-Fi is the difference between a stressful first night and a good one. Use this checklist to get every utility connected on time.

Which utilities are you responsible for?

Check your lease. Many apartments include water, sewer and trash in rent or bill them as a flat fee, while you set up electricity and internet yourself. Houses usually put everything in the tenant's name. Ask the leasing office for a list of providers for your address.

Choosing internet

  • Fiber gives the fastest, most reliable speeds where available.
  • Cable is widely available and fast, though upload speeds are lower.
  • 5G home internet needs no installation and often has no contract — good for renters who move often.
  • Most households are fine with 100–300 Mbps; heavy streaming, gaming or working from home may justify more.
  • Buying your own compatible modem/router can save a monthly rental fee.

Avoiding utility deposits

Utilities often ask for a deposit when you have a thin credit file. Ask your current provider for a letter of credit showing on-time payments, choose a prepaid plan, or ask about autopay waivers. Deposits are generally refunded after a period of on-time payments or when you close the account.

Don't forget your old address

  • Schedule shut-off for the day after you move out so you have power for cleaning.
  • Return internet equipment to avoid fees, and take photos of the return receipt.
  • Give each provider your forwarding address for final bills and deposit refunds.
